Job Description Director Communications - BioPharmaceuticals
PURPOSE:
The Director, BioPharmaceuticals Communications will serve as a lead business partner with the BioPharm Business unit. It is a broad and complex role (based on multiple therapeutic areas/upcoming launches) with accountability for all BioPharm communications, including corporate branding initiatives, public relations campaigns, product communications, internal home office communications, and field force communications.
RELATIONSHIPS:
This position reports to the Senior Director, Internal and Business Unit Communications. The incumbent will partner closely with the CVP of BioPharmaceuticals, members of the BioPharm Leadership Team, and interact with all areas within Novo Nordisk regarding BioPharm communications strategy on programs, goals and needs. Collaborates closely with BioPharm commercial teams, CMR, BioPharm HR associate director, Legal; and communications colleagues in HQ and NNI. May participate on global teams relative to BioPharm corporate branding and patient advocacy programs. Coordinates with Diabetes Sales and Marketing communications points as well as Communications’ Centers of Excellence to ensure close coordination, optimization of resources and initiatives across the company. External relationships include professional services vendors such as agencies, consultants, etc.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Strategic Planning & Partnership
• Leads the planning and execution of the BioPharmaceuticals (Sales, Marketing, general) Communications Strategy.
• Develops and implements strategic communications plan for the BioPharmaceuticals business unit in collaboration with colleagues in NNI Communications, BioPharm marketing, sales and other key areas, including Legal and Medical. Partners with BioPharm leadership (vice presidents, etc.) to assess needs, goals and national/geographic priorities; provides strategic communications counsel to ensure direction/messaging/programs are clear and consistent to meet business needs.
• Leverages knowledge of the business and industry to influence decision making and maximize external communications. Serves as a valued advisor and provides counsel on appropriate steps to engage employees in change-related communications.
• Anticipates issues and trends and develops policies and procedures to ensure the effective and timely execution of public relations opportunities.
Corporate Branding/Public Relations
• Develops external communications strategies to positively shape the Novo Nordisk image and reputation among key external stakeholders for BioPharm, largely in the hemophilia and growth disorders communities; directs development and execution of program components designed to demonstrate leadership through action.
• Cultivates external relationships that help highlight leadership positioning of Novo Nordisk and the BioPharm business unit.
• Ensures alignment with overall NNI corporate branding and media relations strategies and messages, and product communications activities.
Product Communications
• Directs development and drives implementation of proactive product communications strategies to support the business goals and strategies of Novo Nordisk across multiple therapeutic areas.
• Identifies and develops new product communications strategies related to upcoming launches and new therapeutic areas (e.g. positioning of new and existing products).
• Leads development of key message platforms, coaches management for media interviews and external speaking opportunities; and works with reporters to shape/influence story coverage for multiple products and therapeutic areas.
• Identifies external resources needed to implement PR programs; directs multiple agencies in tactical execution of various programs; and directs efforts to review/assess agency performance twice per year.
Internal and Field Communications
• Leads the development of a strategic message track and key themes for sales leadership to drive employee understanding of and engagement/alignment with sales priorities.
• Helps identify and shape BioPharm story ideas for enterprise-wide communications.
• Assesses key sales issues and recommends most appropriate strategies in developing and disseminating key messages to the field.
BUDGET AND CONTRACT RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develops requests for proposals based on costs associated with the projects set by senior management.
• Evaluates and provides input on best approach and makes recommendations management on options.
• Actively oversees Biopharm Communications spending to ensure budget expectations are met
• Negotiates contracts with external vendors and media spokespersons for content and ensures alignment with business objectives.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Approximately 25% overnight travel
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS: EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
• A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, English or a related communications discipline required. Advanced degree preferred.
• Requires a minimum of 12 years of corporate communications experience with 4 or more years focused on external communications/public relations.
• Ability to collaborate and influence decisions of multiple stakeholders at various levels in the organization.
• Outstanding planning and organizational skills with exceptionally high attention to quality of detail and proven track record of results and follow up
• Proven planning, business writing, and development and implementation of communication initiatives are critical skills for this position.
• Strong written and verbal skills.
• Solid understanding of the pharmaceutical marketplace including medical, regulatory and clinical processes; and promotional/compliance guidelines.
