Job Description PURPOSE:
Responsible for overseeing team and setting strategic direction for legal support of clinical and medical functions for Novo Nordisk Inc. and certain Novo Nordisk affiliates as well as providing direct counselling. This role also develops and drives execution of legal communication plans and strategy across functions/organizational lines. Provides leadership in Legal Department as requested by CVP or in CVP’s absence.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Corporate Vice President (“CVP”), Legal, Patents & Quality (“LPQ”)/General Counsel. Member of LPQ Senior Staff and leadership team(s) for SVP area, including Clinical & Medical Affairs. Leads team of experts in support of medical affairs, operations, and clinical development and trial management functions across current and emerging therapeutic areas, including diabetes, biopharmaceuticals and obesity. Manages legal support of operations at designated NN research affiliate (NNIRC). Provides support to CVP of LPQ, Executive Team for NNI, ExecMan, and other senior management within corporate headquarts and other key customer group(s). Ensures coordination of activities with global legal organization in Denmark and global affiliates. Interact with government agencies, law firms, trade organizations and other external agencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Directly advises the CVP, Legal, Patents and Quality (“LPQ”)\General Counsel and the Executive Team, other NNI leadership teams, ExecMan and other senior management within corporate headquarters on business related issues that have legal implications.
• Works closely with the CMR leadership team in developing strategy and achieving objectives.
• Helps drive legal communication plans and strategy implementation across functions/organizational lines.
• Directs and controls the activities of team of legal professionals (attorneys and paralegals) and support personnel, with overall responsibility for the direction of this team.
• Recognized expert in at least two substantive areas of the law. Expert knowledge of the organization’s business practices and issue. Provides advice and counselling to companies in the Novo Nordisk group in broad range of legal areas to support established and future therapeutic areas for NNI including FDA, clinical development and trial management, contracting, pharmacovigilance, HEOR, regulatory, and medical affairs and communications. Minimizes liabilities and losses from government inspections, investigations, claims and litigations.
• Oversees dedicated legal support for all aspects of business and operations at research affiliate (NNIRC)
• Works on special projects as requested by CVP of LPQ, NNI Executives Team, or Global Legal Board, including working groups, task forces, and launch teams.
• Collaborates closely with other NNI legal department support teams and functional support groups in providing advice and counsel to customer(s). Works closely with senior leadership from line of business in developing strategy and achieving objectives.
• Keeps informed of new laws, regulations, and industry trends affecting the company, and assists with development of policies and training. Proactively shares updates with key stakeholders.
• Manages budgets.
• Proactively identifies risks and mitigating actions.

• Ensure development of Legal Department talent pool and identifying development opportunities for key talent.
• Ensures that high-quality individual development plans are in place and used to increase competencies and/or reach specific goals.
• Ensures that reporting personnel are aware of relevant company policies and procedures.
• Ensures that reporting personnel have annual performance plans (3P forms) in place with annual goals and measurements that are consistent with the priorities of the business and that interim reviews are held.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS: EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
• A J.D. with a minimum of 10 years of relevant legal experience of which 4 years include in-house corporate legal experience.
• A minimum of 3 years supervisory experience preferred.
• Ability to set strategy and direction for complex team handle multiple projects simultaneously.
• Deep understanding of pharmaceutical business and Novo Nordisk products.
• Experience within the healthcare/pharmaceutical industry required.
• Recognized by peers in the industry as an expert in their field and periodic speaking at programs.
• State Bar admission required.
• Strong leadership skills - Proven leader with experience managing complex teams and able to effectively motivate and inspire a team.
• Strong problem-solving skills – demonstrates and exercises creativity and initiative.
• Strong written and verbal communications skills – able to effectively collaborate and communicate with other client groups within the company, including Headquarters and other affiliates as required.
