Job Description Director Communications - Clinical Development, Medical, and Regulatory Affairs (CMR)
PURPOSE:
This position acts as a communications business partner to the CMR Leadership Team providing strategic
communications counsel and support based on their key business strategies and needs to build awareness,
alignment, and commitment to business priorities, leading to greater productivity, retention and focus on
quality.
This position is responsible for driving cultural and/or business change; and building employee awareness,
understanding, acceptance and commitment to the company vision, values and business priorities. This
increased understanding and commitment can have a direct impact on the ability of the corporation to achieve
business goals and increase profits.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Senior Director, Internal and Business Unit Communications. Interacts with SVP of CMR,
members of the CMR Leadership Team, CMR colleagues in the global organization, and management levels
across the home office functions. Collaborates closely with CMR Strategy and Operational Effectiveness,
CMR Human Resources and Public Affairs colleagues. External relationships include working with suppliers
and vendors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
BUDGET AND CONTRACT RESPONSIBILITIES:
o Develops request for proposals based on costs associated with projects set by senior management.
o Evaluates and provides input on the best approach and makes recommendations to senior management on options.
o Negotiates contracts with relevant parties for content and ensures alignment with company objectives.
o Sets budget for each project and oversees the spending to ensure budget expectations are met.
o Provides input and advice to senior leadership on messages for external audiences. Coaches leaders on their communication effectiveness.
o Assesses confidential organization information and provides leaders counsel on appropriates steps to engage employees in change communication.
ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS
Assesses key CMR issues and implements most appropriate strategy in developing and distributing key messages to the organization. This often requires pushing back on senior management to maintain the quality and consistency of tools and messaging.
Develops communication strategies via the yearly NNI Public Affairs strategic planning process. Ensures close and effective coordination and integration with other Communications colleagues in NNI and Denmark.
Develops key metrics to evaluate programs, ensures consistent application of metrics, and creates reports to update key stakeholders on program progress.
Ensures that best in class internal communication tools, processes, etc. are implemented based on internal/external benchmarking.
Leads the development of a strategic message track and key themes for leadership to drive employee understanding of and engagement/alignment with business priorities.
Provides guidance to senior leaders on internal communication implications of projects important to the company.
Sets direction and provides strategy for sustaining key components of the Novo Nordisk Way while ensuring the culture evolves as the affiliate grows.
Serves as a valued advisor and provides leaders counsel on appropriates steps to engage employees in change communication.
Leads the planning and execution of the CMR Communications strategies.
Leverages knowledge of the business and industry to influence decision making and maximize communications both internally and externally.
Partners with CMR department leaders to assess needs, goals and priorities; provides strategic communications counsel to ensure direction/messaging is clear and consistent to meet the business need.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS: EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
• A bachelor’s degree required in journalism, public relations, English or a related communications discipline.
• A minimum of 12 years of progressively increasing corporate communications experience required.
• Ability to interact with all levels of the business.
• Demonstrated ability in leadership/collaboration skills with the ability to develop and communicate a vision and engage people in that vision.
• Demonstrated ability to display expert level critical thinking in applying principles, theories and concepts on a wide range of problems.
• Demonstrated success in creating strategic direction, plans and proven ability to drive and sustain business improvement and results.
• Proven experience in strategic planning and counseling, executive/leadership communications, employee engagement programs, business and news writing, and communications measurement.
